Initial ideas for music magazine

For my music magazine I am intending to do a mix between serious journalism and 'glossy' lifestyle. The reason for doing this is so that I can have a variation of topics in my contents and appeal to an audience of mainly females. I believe that there isn't a very sufficient magazine in the market currently which would appeal to girls who enjoy music and fashion. As far as design is concerned I am thinking of using feminine colours like lilac and pastels but I am not yet certain. I will create a new up and coming band which I will use in my double page spread to write a feature on.

Magazine industry overview

In the UK there is a huge variety of magazines on offer with over 8000 titles available. ‘The Fly’ is the magazine with the highest circulation in the UK. The current revenue of the industry is 7 billion but that is expected to drop between 2012/13 by 4.7% yearly. Around 48,000 people are employed in the magazine industry so it is a very beneficial industry for the UK. The magazine industry, like many other industries is predominantly owned by large companies. Some of the companies owning vast amounts of the industry are:
Bauer – 26%
IPC – 20%
BBC – 8%
Hearst – 7%

Big names like Bauer find it much easier to survive in the magazine industry because they also get financial support from the other sectors of their business. Furthermore large companies will have more contacts to rely on where as small magazine titles will have very few resources to depend on which is why most small magazines will be bought by companies like Bauer or IPC in order for them to survive and grow.

Technology as it stands is developing at an extremely fast rate. With the release of items such as the ipad and smartphones it’s becoming so much easier to access media and news online so there is a much lower demand for magazines.

Music magazines, genre and representation

Most music magazines are predominantly male targeted. This is backed up by the following percentages of male readers for magazines:
NME - 65%
Classic Rock - 93%
Metal Hammer - 66%
Uncut - 96%
Kerrang! - 60%
Mixmag - 72%

Here its shown that not one of these magazines has at least an equal ratio of male to female readers. This is because most magazines are deliberatly aimed at a male audience. This is done with the use of masculine colour schemes and very dominant alpha males from bands. Producers

Mood board

This is the mood I created to represent my target audience.

Female readership:  87%
Average age:   20
Working student: 61%
Location:    London

Audience research

From my research I wanted to find out if the age group I am targetting would be interested in the type of magazine I am intending to produce. My results show that my target audience go to music events once a month which is good because one of the main features of my magazine will be announcing music events.

Planning for College Magazine

I am producing a college based magazine based at an audience of 16-19 year olds. I have chosen to call my magazine 'Fresher' as it is an american term for the first year of Uni and it gives students an anspiration for college students. I have also used it because it makes you think of the sweets. This concept is reflected in my background which has a fuzzy and fun colour scheme. On the first issue I will have a 16-19 year old girl with a folder to show she is in college. The following issue I will use a male on the cover to show that the magazine is aimed at both males and females. The main focus of the topics in this magazine will be college related e.g. revision tips, college based activities. But it will also have the typical magazine related things like horoscopes and quizes. I will make the magazine free because students are typically known for not having a lot of money so I think it will be much more appealing to them if it is free.
